Almost every day brings us news about ways the big banks are taking risks, adding fees and limiting services as they continue to seek out ways to make higher profits off their customers. If you’re interested in an alternative to large corporate banks, consider the benefits of a credit union. A credit union is a not-for-profit organization that is owned by its members. It operates as a cooperative, enabling members to pool their resources to provide services to other members. On the other hand, banks are for-profit organizations typically owned by shareholders. They sell financial services in order to maximize profits for the shareholders. When it comes to making a big purchase and managing your money, on average you’ll find better rates and lower fees at a credit union. You will likely find better service, too. According to the American Customer Satisfaction IndexTM, credit unions received an Index Score of 87 compared to the banks Index Score of 75. The lowest-scoring companies: Bank of America and JP Morgan Chase. H-E-B Federal Credit Union is proud to be part of the H-E-B family. Our History
H-E-B Federal Credit Union was chartered in 1963 to serve the financial needs of H-E-B Grocery Company warehouse and transportation Partners in San Antonio, Texas.
Founding members L. B. Elmor and Anna Mae Smith, along with other dedicated volunteers, operated the credit union for its first two years until a president was hired in 1965. In 1978, H-E-B FCU opened its first branch to serve the San Antonio Retail Support Center (SARSC). As H-E-B continued to grow and welcome new Partners, credit union membership expanded alongside it.
In 1994, H-E-B FCU opened a location to serve members in McAllen and the Border region. Shared branching services were introduced in 1997, initially adding two locations in Houston where members could conduct transactions. Shared branching has since expanded significantly, providing members access to more than 400 shared branch locations in Texas and more than 6,500 nationwide.
To better serve its geographically diverse membership, H-E-B FCU launched the Financial Service Center (FSC) in mid-1997. The FSC enabled members to conduct business efficiently via telephone, fax, internet, and mail.
Following a companywide initiative in 1996, H-E-B FCU introduced its Bold Promise in 1997. The Bold Promise defines the credit union’s commitment to excellence and serves as an internal compass, guiding purpose-driven actions and fostering lifelong relationships with members.
As the credit union entered the 21st century, H-E-B FCU launched a new website and introduced NetBranch online banking and bill payment services. A debit card program followed in 2002, and in 2003, the credit union proudly celebrated 40 years of service.
In 2006, H-E-B FCU expanded member support by implementing a custom call center offering live assistance 24/7, while continuing to grow its electronic service offerings. Mobile Browser Banking and Text Message Banking were introduced in 2009, providing members with instant account access via mobile devices.
Continuing its focus on digital convenience, H-E-B FCU introduced My Deposit in 2010, allowing members to make secure deposits 24/7 using a scanner and internet connection—reducing the need for in-person branch visits. That same year, FinanceWorks was launched, offering members a comprehensive financial management tool to track spending, manage budgets, and build savings.
In 2012, H-E-B FCU rolled out its iPad app, followed soon after by an Android tablet app. Later that year, My Mobile Deposit debuted, enabling qualifying members to deposit checks using their iPhone or Android device.
H-E-B FCU celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2013, marking five decades of service to H-E-B Partners and their families. Later that year, a new online account-opening platform was introduced, providing a streamlined, user-friendly experience for new and existing members.
Digital service enhancements continued in 2014 with the introduction of Popmoney Mobile, allowing members to send money to others through the mobile banking app. In 2015, NetBranch was upgraded to support mobile enrollment, Touch ID login for compatible iPhones, and expanded mobile deposit functionality on Android tablets.
In 2016, after 25 years at its previous location, H-E-B FCU relocated its San Antonio branch and administrative offices from Loop 410 and Blanco Road to the Lockhill Crossing facility on Loop 1604. The new branch officially opened on May 23.
That same year, H-E-B Federal Credit Union earned national recognition for financial strength, ranking ninth among the Top 10 Healthiest Credit Unions in the country by Deposit Accounts. Previously, in 2014, H-E-B FCU ranked 24th among the Top 200 Healthiest Credit Unions nationwide.
